Open-Loop Payment in Seoul — Use Your Credit Card for Transit
Traveling around Seoul just got easier.
Starting in 2025, visitors no longer need to buy a T-money card or local prepaid transit card — you can now simply tap your international credit or debit card to ride subways and buses across the city.
This system, called Open-Loop Payment, works with Visa, Mastercard, and UnionPay cards that have a contactless (NFC) symbol. It’s designed to make life easier for short-term travelers and business visitors.

- No refunds via machine — if a fare error occurs, visit a subway help desk.
4. For First-Time Visitors
If you just landed at Incheon Airport, you can start using Open-Loop right away:
- Make sure your Visa/Mastercard has NFC.
- Take the AREX Express Train to Seoul Station — just tap your card at entry.
- Once in the city, the same card works for buses, taxis (via Kakao T), and even convenience stores.
